Carving Halloween pumpkins is a fun and time honored event. Every child remembers trick or treating with carved pumpkins with candles glowing through their eyes, nose mouth and just about any other design imaginable, the pumpkins tend to go limp here in the heart of Texas because of the hot weather. They are biodegradable, but think of all the things you can do to give them a re purposed life, before and after carving. Here are a few ideas.

Save the seeds. After scooping out the inards, rinse and dry and roast seeds in the oven for a healthy snack. Or plant them in your garden and watch new pumpkins grow.

Make pumpkin puree. Using a large sharp spoon scoop out the pulp for the inside shell, working down about a half inch to the whitish colored pulp. Steam boil or bake the pulp. When cooled use a food processor or mash by hand. Make your favorite pumpkin pie.

Pumpkin hummus. Take a can of chick peas, drain and rinse, add one garlic clove, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/4 cup water. 3 Tbsp tahini, 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, salt and pepper to taste and add to food processor. Drizzle with olive oil.

Feed the birds. Add the seeds to your bird feeder they love them.

Have a spa day with a pumpkin facial. Pumpkins are loaded with vitamins A, C and E (all known to fight wrinkles) . Combine 2 Tbsp pumpkin puree, 1/2 tsp honey and 1/2 tsp milk in a small bowl. Mix well. Apply to face, leave on 20 minutes and rinse.

Centerpieces. If you have not carved your pumpkins and just use them for table decorations they will last until Thanksgiving. Healthy pumpkins can last 8 to 12 weeks.

Make a scent diffuser. If your pumpkin has not been carved, remove the top and scoop out the inards- don't forget to save the seeds. Cut a few vent holes in the pumpkin, and rub the insides with cinnamon , nutmeg and cloves and ginger. Put a tea light candle inside , light, and your home will smell like a pumpkin pie is baking in the oven.
