Lets talk about Assistance Animals.  The Fair Housing Act defines Assistance Animals as "animals that work, assist, or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability, including providing emotional support, which alleviates or improves the symptoms or effects of a disability; such an animal isn't a pet."

Assistance animals aren't required to have any formal training or certifications like a service animal.  They require a letter from a medical doctor or therapist to be classified.

An Emotional Support Animal ((ESA) is a companion animal that a medical professional has determined provides benefit for an individual with a disability.  An individual who wants protection under federal law for an Emotional Support Animal must get a note from a therapist stating that they have a mental or emotional disability and that the animal provides a benefit.  A licensed mental health professional can write a prescription for an ESA, providing the individual with the therapist's official ESA letter, which makes the animal a certified ESA.

Emotional Support Animals are not trained like Service Dogs; they only need to be well-behaved by pet standards, including toilet trained and no habits that disturb neighbors. ESA's are not only dogs, they can be any animals that provide therapeutic support to a disabled or elderly owner through companionship.

Therapy Dogs are canines trained to interact with various people, providing affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, hospices, disaster areas, and to people with autism. Therapy dogs are trained to interact with lots of people; a service dog is trained to ignore all people except for the person to whom it's in service.

Assistance animals are of great benefit  Many are used by people with disabilities today for many reasons.
