Labor Day Is Coming
Labor Day is coming and do you know the importance or real meaning or do you just enjoy the few days that you have off for the holiday? Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday that is celebrated on the first Monday in September. it is to honor the American labor movement and the contributions that the workers made to the country. It is also the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend which is considered the unofficial end of summer in the United States. Labor Day is recognized as a Federal holiday.
There are two separate stories as to the origination of Labor Day in which either Peter .McGuire, a vice president of the American Federation of Labor had initiated the initial proposal in 1882 to set aside a day for a "general holiday for the Laboring classes"; or the event originated in connection with a general assembly of the Knights of Labor convened in New York City in September of 1882 on September 5th under the guidance of the Central Labor Union of New York Secretary Matthew Maguire.
Oregon became the first stare to make Labor Day an official public holiday. It was made an official federal holiday in 1894; and all states, the District of Columbia, and the United States territories have made Labor Day a statutory holiday.
Labor Day is the "unofficial end of summer" because it marks the end of the what we call the summer season. Many fall activities such as school and sports start around this time of the year. Labor Day weekend marks the beginning of many sports events such as: NCAA teams usually play their first games that weekend and the NFL plays their kickoff game the Thursday following Labor Day; National Hot Rod Association holds their finals in Indianapolis during Labor Day Weekend.
There are huge shopping sales during Labor Day weekend that many people take advantage of, especially the back to school sales. Take advantage of your time off, enjoy your family ! And... as the old adage goes in fashion... time to stop wearing white now!
